EXPANDED Embedded SYSTEMS Design FOCUS among HIGHLIGHTS OF 38th Design Automation Conference

Premier Electronics Industry Event to Draw Thousands of Engineers,

Researchers, Developers, Executives and Scholars Worldwide

BOULDER, Colo. March 7, 2001 ¾ An enhanced program devoted to embedded systems design is among the highlights of the 38th annual Design Automation Conference (DAC), to be held June 18-22, 2001, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The annual conference, which continues to serve as the electronic design industry’s leading event, will unite the electronic design automation (EDA) industry, bringing design engineers, silicon strategists, embedded systems developers and scholars together to collaborate on tools and methodologies for effective system and IC design. Approximately 17,000 attendees are expected to attend this year’s conference.

In response to the increasing role that embedded systems software is playing in systems-on-a-chip (SoC) designs, DAC will feature several new items focused on this topic. These include an "Embedded Systems Showcase" on the exhibit floor, a plenary panel session of top executives on "Embedded System Design: The Real Story," and a special embedded systems software mini-track. In addition to the emphasis on embedded systems, the traditional technical program is exceptionally strong this year, with more than 160 papers, sessions, panels and tutorials to choose from, including five parallel tracts covering system level design, synthesis, physical design, verification, interconnect, power and IP issues.

"The pervasiveness of embedded systems in consumer applications and the design complexity challenge that these systems present is a major reason behind DAC’s embedded program emphasis this year," said Jan Rabaey, 38th DAC general chair and professor of electrical engineering and computer science at University of California at Berkeley. "As part of our overall effort to remain in the forefront of design technology and methods, it’s important that we begin to address these design challenges to help ensure the reliability and safety of these critical systems."

Dr. Henri Samueli, co-chairman and chief technical officer, Broadcom Corporation, will deliver the opening keynote address on Tuesday, June 19. Willem P. Roelandts, president and chief executive officer, Xilinx, Inc., will deliver the keynote address on Thursday, June 21.

More than 260 EDA software, hardware and semiconductor companies will showcase current design, product and manufacturing expertise beginning with Exhibitor presentations on Monday, June 18th. This year’s conference will also include the following:

  • Workshop for Women in Design Automation - The highly attended, sixth annual Workshop for Women in Design Automation, a full-day interactive seminar for professional women in the EDA industry, will kick off the conference on Sunday, June 17. Lynn LeBlanc, senior vice president for customer advocacy at Cadence Design Systems, will give the keynote address at this workshop. Also, the second annual Marie Pistilli Women in EDA Achievement Award will be bestowed upon an individual recognized for contributions made to the advancement of women in the field of design automation. The award is named for Marie Pistilli who contributed many years to the success and growth of DAC.
  • Interoperability Workshop - The second annual workshop invites leading semiconductor, system and EDA companies to discuss the need for a new design system architecture and supporting standard data model API.
  • Microelectronic Systems Educators Conference - Co-located with DAC, the 2001 International Conference on Microelectronic Systems Education is dedicated to furthering undergraduate and graduate education in designing and building innovative microelectronic systems. The conference will be held at the Las Vegas Hilton, June 17-18 and is sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committees on Design Automation and VLSI, and the Test Technology Technical Council.

Continuing its tradition of giving back to the industry, DAC will award over $270,000 in professional development funds. The money is dedicated to graduate and undergraduate scholarships for students seeking further academic studies and careers in the EDA industry. In addition, the Student Design Contest, sponsored by more than a dozen electronics companies, will award more than $20,000 in recognition of undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate excellence in the development of operational and conceptual designs.

About DAC

DAC is the premier forum for the electronic design industry to exchange information on products, methodologies, and processes. Attended by more than 17,000 developers, designers, researchers, managers, and engineers from leading electronics companies and universities around the world, DAC includes more than 260 exhibitors and offers a robust technical program covering the electronics industry’s hottest trends.

The conference is sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery/Special Interest Group on Design Automation (ACM/SIGDA), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers/Circuits and Systems Society (IEEE/CAS) and the Electronic Design Automation Consortium (EDA Consortium).
